If you’ve started taking Ozempic (or other GLP-1 medications like Wegovy or Mounjaro) for weight loss or diabetes and you’ve noticed more hair in your brush or shower drain, you’re not alone. Many people are wondering—can Ozempic cause hair loss?
Let’s break it down.
First: What Is Ozempic?
Ozempic is a prescription medication that helps regulate blood sugar and appetite. It’s FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes, but it's also being widely used off-label for weight loss.
And it works—sometimes dramatically. But with rapid weight loss can come some unexpected side effects, including hair shedding.
Why Might Hair Loss Happen on Ozempic?
There’s no strong evidence that Ozempic directly causes hair loss. However, hair shedding is a known side effect of significant weight loss, no matter how it's achieved. This type of hair loss is called telogen effluvium—and it happens when your body shifts into “survival mode” and temporarily pauses hair growth to conserve nutrients.
Factors that can contribute:
Rapid weight loss
Lower protein or calorie intake
Stress on the body (physical or emotional)
Nutrient deficiencies (like iron, zinc, or biotin)
The Good News?
Telogen effluvium is typically temporary. Once your body adjusts to its new weight and nutritional balance, hair growth usually resumes.
What Can You Do to Support Hair Health?
Don’t skimp on protein. Hair is made of keratin, a protein. Make sure your diet supports healthy growth.
Consider supplements. Iron, vitamin D, zinc, and biotin are key for hair follicle health—but talk to your doctor before starting anything new.
Stay hydrated. Good circulation and hydration support your scalp.
Be gentle. Avoid tight hairstyles and harsh chemical treatments while shedding is happening.
See a professional. If you're concerned, talk to your doctor or a trichologist who specializes in hair and scalp health.
A Note from Behind the Chair…
As a stylist, I’ve seen the emotional toll hair loss can take. You’re not alone—and you don’t have to figure it out by yourself. If you’ve noticed changes in your hair while taking Ozempic or experiencing weight loss, let’s talk about supportive styles, scalp treatments, or extensions that can help you feel like you again during the regrowth phase.
